The story of the Essex, a whaling ship sunk, appropriately, by a whale in the Pacific. Five of the survivors spent 3 months at sea in open whaleboats. Their story was told by Owen Chase, first mate of the Essex. Years later, another young seaman, Herman Melville, met Chase and asked to borrow the copy of the narrative. The author makes available the fulles account published of the Essex wreck and provides the most extensive analysis of its literary history and role it shaping Moby Dick in Melville's imagination. - from the dj.
