Forges and Furnaces in the Province of Pennsylvania

Philadelphia: The Pennsylvania Society of the Colonial Dames of America, 1914. Hardcover. Baby blue stamped cloth with gilt letters on spine & gilt decoration on front cover; gilt top edges; 204 pp., BW plates. VG (Carries former owner info on first page.). Item #153862

Chronicles the many individual forges and furnaces begun and in operation in mineral-rich Pennsylvania from 1716 to 1771, before the time of the American Revolutionary War. Focuses on the sites, the men who founded them, and their colonial histories, and not on the process of metalwork itself. Approaches the sites in chronological order. The index helps to locate specific ones. Includes an illustrationed "Sequence of Franklin Fireplaces," too. A nice compendium of early industrial history in what would become the Keystone State.
