Title on spine: Birds of Pennsylvania. "The present report is a brief summary of field observations made by the writer, during the past ten or twelve years, in the State of Pennsylvania, with numerous notes from naturalists and collectors, in nearly every county in the commonwealth." (p. xiii) Warren served as state ornithologist of the State Board of Agriculture, and 19,000 copies of these revised edition books were ordered printed and distributed to legislators, schools, colleges, and a variety of governmental agencies. Features 100 color plates copied from an Audubon book, to cut down on costs. By this time, the numbers of passenger pigeons had dwindled dramatically; and Warren noted that only small groups were seen, as opposed to the previous great flocks. He had no way of knowing the species would be extinct in another 24 years. And much more to consider, with this lovely book.
