Majority of text is in English, with some in German. A collection of 19 articles written by architect and art historian Rachel Wischnitzer (1885-1989). "The doyenne of historians of Jewish art, she was a pioneer in the field when she published in 1913 her first article on the ancient synagogue of Lutsk. Her wide interests drove her to study and publish about Hebrew illuminated manuscripts, synagogue architecture, Jewish and general iconography. Her major contribution to Jewish iconography was a courageous attempt to find a single theme to which all the painting in the third century Syagogue at Dura Europos would adhere. The messianic theme which runs through th biblical and midrashic subjects painted on the walls of this synagogue, is a key to understanding other objects of Jewish art with similar illustrative and symbolic topics in Antiquity, as well as in later periods.... These [articles] are a must for any art lover who wishes to understand in depth the European and Near Eastern culture and their intricate relations throughout history." (dj).
