Traces the history of this property, the buildings, and its people. "In June of 1895, the doors of [Melvil and Annie G. Dewey's] new venture opened on Mirror [Lake's] east shore, which they first called the 'Morningside.' It was to be a cooperative undertaking, and was initially called 'Placid Park Club.' While the start was less than auspicious, persistence paid off and it did get up and running the following year under the new name of 'Placid Club.' Years later, Melvil Dewey predicted that the institution he had created there might last 1,000 years, which is ironic considering the events which later unfolded. ...There was no 100th anniversary celebration, as the Club had closed its doors in 1980, shortly after the end of the XIII Winter Olympic Games. Since then, other unfortunate events have occurred, and as this volume goes to press, only remnants of what was once known as the Lake Placid Club, stand as testimony to the great 'Experiment in Intelligence,' as it was once called."
