"The second edition of The Complete Peerage was published over forty-nine years, from 1910 to 1959, and in that time many corrections and possible additions were suggested to the various editors. These accumulated, and the present volume was first promised in 1959 in the preface to volume XII, part of The Complete Peerage, 'if financial resources permit', Unfortunately financial resources did not permit, and the corrections that had accumulated over nearly fifty years were all deposited in the House of Lords Record Office. These papers consisted of volumes annotated by Doubleday (editor 1920-41), but probably also included annotations by Vicary Gibbs (editor 1910-26, who seems to have shared corrections with Doubleday) and other members of staff. There are letters sent to the editors and many other papers, including a draft of part of a correction volume by R. S. Lea, last (acting) editor, and an outline of the peers created from 1939-67, prepared by R. S. Lea with additions by Mr Christopher Dobson, lately Librarian, House of Lords. From these I have extracted all factual corrections (omitting merely illustrative notes on the grounds of space) and additions, and added to them all corretions of which I was aware, as well as corrections and additions brought to my notice by historians and genealogists. This volume brings the previous ones up to date. It includes the above corrections and additions, as well as information on all heriditary peers (and their wives) who have succeeded since the previous volumes were published, usually to the end of 1995 but occasionally after this date."
