"No gardens in eighteenth-century England were more famous than those at Stowe in Buckinghamshire. They were more frequently visited, more influential and more often described than any others outside London, becoming the subject of a growing stream of journals, poems and guidebooks throughout the century. The aim of the present volume is to collect into one place the most important pieces written on Stowe between 1700 and 1750, so as to throw new light on the development of the gardens and reflect the changing attitude of informed opinion towards them." (intro) Contains 26 excerpts from various authors who describe or mention the Stowe gardens. Except fo Horace Walpole, who is quoted in the intro but is explained away as being "just as interested in how his audience will respond as he is in the subject of his letter." So there, Mr. Walpole. A nifty way to examine the history of a place -- through the eyes of people who saw it for themselves.
