Another classic by the intrepid novelist and travel writer, Rose Macaulay (Towers of Trebizond, etc.). A gigantic excursion across the continents and down the centuries through the marvellous relics of dead cities, palaces, and civilizations. Macaulay speculates on the people who built and on those who destroyed these glorious places (and who continue to do so today...) and what their ruins have meant to others. Covers archaeological and architectural aspects, literary associations (think Henry James, Petrarch, and others), and contains both photos and sketches by travellers from the past. A much more enjoyable reference than a new gizmo.
