For several years within the framework of the Hermitage 20/21 project the museum has been organizing exhibitions of acclaimed artists and photographers. Santiago Calatrava’s retrospective exhibition “The Quest for Movement” opens the series of presentations of world-renowned architects. The Hermitage Museum itself can be seen as a sort of encyclopedia of architectural styles represented by the names of Bartolommeo Rastrelli, Giacomo Quarenghi, Carlo Rossi, Leo von Klenze. The idea of locating the exhibition of a modern architect in historic interiors gave impetus to the intriguing dialogue of forms and structures accentuating the notion of “space moving through space”. In the catalogue published in cooperation with Calatrava’s Studio the architect’s work is represented even more vividly and fully than at the exhibition.
