Barbara Chase-Riboud: The Monument Drawings
Wilmington, NC: St. John's Museum of Art, 1997, 2000. Softcover. White & illus. wraps, orange paper dust jacket, unpaginated, 24 BW plates. VG. Item #150163
Issued in conjunction with a series of 1998-2001 exhibitions featuring these drawings by Philadelphia-born artist Barbara Chase-Riboud (b. 1939). The artwork allows "us to re-examine and uniquely interpret historic figures and events. These drawings intricately weave together the artist's career as a sculptor, writer, poet, and archaeologist of sorts, as she often investigates and unearths issues important to peoples of African descent. While executed in a classical drawing style, these works offer striking parallels with painting and sculpture created hundreds of years ago." (preface, Gary Vikan) With an essay by Anthony F. Janson, a chronology, and reproductions of the 24 drawings. Uncommon.
