A major re-evaluation of the cultural, political, and sociological assumptions which have been held to distinguish the 'peculiar' course of modern German history from that of other western nations. Deals with the special character of the German mind, the German lack of political maturiay, the feudalization of the German bourgsoisie (all the familiar arguments). The authors reconsider the view tha the economic modernization of Germany was accompanied by the survival of deep-seated, pre-modern social values and political structures, because of its failure to pass through a bourgeois revolution on the western model.
