Begins with a lengthy (lxiv) introduction about the author by his wife. The main subject is about the asterolepsis, specifically at Stromness, a parish and one of the largest towns in the Orkney Islands of Scotland. Asterolepses are a fish, "an extinct genus of placoderms from the Devonian of North America and Europe. They were heavily armored benthic detritivores with distinctive jointed limb-like pectoral fins." (Wikipedia).
