Issued in conjunction with this auction of 25 oriental rugs once owned by U.S. Senator William A. Clark (1839-1925), who once proclaimed himself "the richest man west of the Mississippi." This lot includes "The Clark Sickle-Leaf Carpet," an 8.75" x 9.5" wool and cotton carpet that originated from southeast Persia. Its magnificent colors come through here: rose red, apricot, mauve, light dusty rose, rust, mocha, yellow, dark blue, medium blue, blue-green, lgiht green, walnut, and ivory. Many intricate details surround the willow or sickle-leaf theme. Esimated at $5-7 million, this marvelous piece eventually went for $33.7 million. Stunning visuals, all around.
