As a salon hostess, Mme. Graffigny counted Voltaire and his friend, Devaux, among her friends. Her daily correspondence with Devaux, lasting more than 25 years, is contained in these 15 volumes and provides invaluable insight into 18th-century France, its culture and the role and status of women during that period. With a list of abbreviations and symbols, a chronology, list of illustrations, an extensive introduction, numerous text notes, an index of locutions and a general index.
