River Scenery by Turner and Girtin; Engraved by Eminent Engravers from Drawings by J.M.W. Turner, R.A. and the Late Thomas Girtin with descriptions by Mrs. Hofland
London: W. B. Cooke, 1827. Softcover. Paper portfolio containing the title page, 22 pp. text and 18 superb steel engraving PROOFS. VG, a few plates have a bit of foxing. Text pages are uncut. Item #138877
This edition is a set of India Paper Proofs, with the final engraving, Shields on River Tyne, numbered as Plate 1 but marked in pencil as Plate 18, as per a change requested by the artist. 15 of the engravings are after Turner and 3 are after Girtin. The texts describe each plate beautifully; the rivers and the landscapes and monumental buildings around them. This edition was the final one printed, and three of the originally-planned 21 plates were eliminated by this time, because of problems with the new steel engraving system, a changeover from the older copper engraving system. For a very in-depth commentary on these plates and the story behind the production of them, please see the web site of the Tate Gallery furnished upon request. A very rare set in beautiful condition, all suitable for framing.
