New York: American Art Association, 1886. Hardcover. Burgundy stamped boards, gilt letters on front cover, gilt edges all around. 305 pp., no illus. Issued in conjunction with an 1886 art auction of 2628 items, and one that is notable for several reasons. First, it contains a very important selection of French paintings. Few American artists were included in the collection, among them Frederic Church, Joseph Lyman Jr., Francis Miller, P.P. Ryder. The majority of the artists were still living at the time of this sale. Just as importantly, at the end of the catalogue is a lengthy listing of engravings and etchings with an introduction by Frederick Keppel. This listing gives small biographies of each artist represented. A superb collection listing 902 works on paper. Overall a very useful catalogue.
