Item #135254

On cover and spine: "The Scott Centenary Exhibition." Alternate title, from opening page: "A Descriptive Account of the Portraits, Busts, Published Writings, and Manuscripts, of Sir Walter Scott, Bart., Collected and Exhibited at Edinburgh on Occasion of the Scott Centenary in 1871." Having two title pages that carry slightly different information lends to confusion. Some say this volume is still the best beginning bibliography of the works and depictions of Sir Walter Scott. A somewhat scarce book. This is an original hardcover volume, not a new print-on-demand, paperback, or e-book. It carries two handwritten inscriptions, in two separate hands. One reads in part: "Presentation copy from Arthur Constable a member of the publishiing house in which Scott was once a partner and ...which ruined Scott to James Dykes Campbell, numerous portraits of Scott and other plates, only 400 copies printed for sale, Fine Bibliography of Scott, Elegant work for furth description refer to Meuzies Catalogue at whose sale is fetched 10.50." Second one reads in part: "To James Dykes Campbell, in memory of ... the 16th day of June 1891, the first occasion of our meeting in the flesh, at his household West .... Arch J. Constable."
