Benjamin Robbins Curtis (1809-1874) served as an associate justice on the U.S. Supreme Court from 1851-1857, and was therefore involved in the Dred Scott decision. His son Benjamin R. Curtis compiled these volumes and used as a base a memoir written by his uncle, George Ticknor Curtis.
