From the jacket--This biography is the first to be based on the enormous cache of DesBarres papers acquired by the Public Archives of Canada a decade ago. With these the public records have been extensively used, together with the papers of such major British public figures as the Earls of Chatham and Dartmouth. The author has borne in mind his own initial difficulties with technical problems in such areas as hydographic history and land tenure regulations and accordingly taken pain to write of them in a manner intelligible to the nonspecialist.
