Artists In Exile

New York: Pierre Matisse Gallery, 1942, March 3 to 28. Softbound. Off-white wraps. (12) pp., one bw photograph. VG. Item #124962

Contains writings by James Thrall Soby and Nicolas Calas. A significant and scarce (2 others known in a signed state). Signed by Pierre Matisse on the rear cover, and in colored inks on the blank page opposite the iconic photograph (by George Platt Lynes) by all the participating artists. These would include Berman, Breton, Chagall, Ernst, Leger, Lipchitz, Masson, Matta, Mondrian, Ozenfant, Seligmann, Tanguy, Tchelitchew and Zadkine. Each artist has signed their name in a colored ink. Some artists used two pens on this copy, and side-by-side comparison with another copy reveals that they did not all use the same pen on all copies thus signed, nor place their signature in the location. Thus unique and a powerful representation of a moment in time when all 14 of these artists were in one location. Image available upon application.
