Remarks on the Recent Travels of Dr. Barth in Central Africa, or Soudan

New York: n.p., 1858 circa. Softcover. Printed paper wraps, removed from a nonce volume; 18 pp. Intact but with some age discoloration and an ex-lib. stamp from Princeton University. Item #120065

The owner of this booklet was a "Prof. Giger," who was George Musgrave Giger, professor, from 1847 to 1865, of Greek and Latin and later a lecturer in architecture, at Princeton University. Hodgson was the consul of the US at Algiers and Tunis and presented this paper before the Ethnological Society of New York in November of 1858. The main information in the essay is about the language (and some culture) of the Touaregs, a Berber peoples of the Sahara. An excellent resource for research and cultural history of the Touaregs, known sometimes as "The Blue People."
