A standard three-volume reference work for many years, this edition is "about a third longer than the Lists of 1932 and 1936, and is the first to contain a wealth of illustrations, arranged in chronological and systematic order, thus giving the volumes an encyclopaedic character." (dj) The first volume contains the substantial text, while the remaining two volumes contain the 1988 illustrations. A nice resource to have at hand.
