Dissertation. Considers the once-neglected prints of American artists William and Marguerite Zorach. "Couples a print list of the Zorachs' graphic oeuvre with essays focusing on the major issues reflected in these works. Nearly one hundred prints the Zorachs completed from c. 1910 to the late 1960s -- mostly linoleum cuts, but also etchings and lithographs -- touch upon the major concerns of American modernism: 'primitivism,' 'nature,' and the modernist quest to reach 'universals.' From a contextual approach, I use these works as points of departure to demonstrate that the Zorachs' attitudes towards these subjects reflected a larger sociological mindset." (abstract) Burk currently teaches art history at Curry College.
