"Individual excavations and their publication will continue to enrich our knowledge of particular sites in particular periods, but for an understanding of the civilisation as a whole we cannot hope to have elicited the maximum information from the discoveries until we can examine in detail the history and development of the various classes of material. The present work is an attempt to examine one such class. With a few exceptions the stone vases have been studied in corpore by the writer. This was the more necessary since much of the material has not previously been published or has not been fully published. That the subject merits study is suggested by the quality and amount of material, about 3500 vases, their long period of use in Crete, from about 2600 B.C. to 11 B.C., and their importance, as exports, for Minoan foreign relations." (introduction) Highly illustrated. Uncommon.
