Text in Dutch/English. This appears to be a facsimile reproduction, beautifully presented, of the original 1940 publication of the Dutch edition, with the author's biography information and bookseller information included. The second part of the book is the English translation of the Dutch text, also in 32 pages but without the bio/advertisement information. Both translations include the same 17 bw illustrations. Included is Escher's interest in motif and his inspiration from the canon and fugue of Bach's compositions. A wonderful biography centered on Escher's creativity, including the voyages from which he also drew inspiration. The author was a renowned Dutch journalist, literary critic, and essayist. If you appreciate Escher's work, you need to read this book! If you do not understand Escher's art, you need to read this book!
