A reprint of the book written by sailor J. Ross Browne, along with illustrations by him. The editor of this new edition is John Seelye. Includes a note on the text, an introduction by Seelye, and the facsimile. Browne "spent many years wandering about the world, and his initial voyage, when he was just 22, as a common sailor on a whaling vessel out of New Bedford, Massachusetts, resulted in [this book], first published in 1846. [It] contains the impressions of a perceptive, literate youth whose romantic preconceptions of life at sea were quickly destroyed by his experience on a Yankee whaler."
