Telesforas Valius: 10 gravures sur bois

Lustenau, Austria: Imprimerie de Lustenau (printers), 1945. Original; one of 300 copies, not numbered. Hardcover. Plain tan cardboard with dark brown cloth spine. Black title. [34] with 10 bw woodcuts, each on a single page. With an inscription on the title page. Contents VG with beautiful plates. Pages are, however, age toned, and the quality is a bit fragile (war time - same for the covers). One page of text, in back, is torn but repaired with tape. Item #153674

Text in French, English, German, and Lithuanian. With an essay by Bechtold, the plates, list of plates (in all four languages), and colophon. Beautiful woodcuts by Lithuanian artist, Telesforas Valius, of Lithuanian scenes: Easter Morning in Lithuania; The devil of fairy-tales; Bidding farewell; In times of D. Poska; four images of The tragedy on the shore of the Baltic Sea (The waiting woman; Thrown out on the sea-shore out of the Waves; Funeral procession; The coffin); Famine; and Fire in a Lithuanian village. Rather grim but beautifully-executed, detailed images full of symbolism and in a rather fantastical style. It is very difficult to differentiate among the letters in the hand-written inscription, so no translation is included. No idea who the signers are. Dated May 20, 1947, in Augsburg (Germany).
